Sansevero Chapel: Naples between alchemy, art, and mystery
In the heart of Naples’ historic center, nestled between Via dei Tribunali and San Domenico Maggiore, stands a place that seems more dreamlike than real: the Sansevero Chapel.
Famous for the Veiled Christ, it is far more than a Baroque art museum — it is an esoteric manifesto in stone, a compendium of symbols, enigmas, and visions that still fascinate scholars and visitors alike.
Originally built as a private chapel for the noble di Sangro family, it was completely transformed in the 18th century by Prince Raimondo di Sangro: scientist, inventor, philosopher, Freemason, alchemist. • The ceiling frescoes and Latin inscriptions are filled with arcane, cosmic, and experimental references.

In the underground chamber lie two enigmatic human figures — the Anatomical Machines — preserving one of Naples’ greatest esoteric mysteries.
These are two skeletons (male and female) with their entire circulatory system perfectly intact and visible in astonishing detail.
Legend has it that Raimondo di Sangro “metalized” their blood using a secret alchemical formula.
In truth, they are extraordinary examples of anatomical artistry, still the subject of ongoing scientific and historical study.
