On the hill of Pizzofalcone (the ancient Monte Echia), exactly where Greek colonists founded the first settlement of Parthenope, the sea breeze mixes with an almost surreal silence.
Here, far from the clamor of the alleys, stands the Church of Santa Maria Egiziaca a Pizzofalcone, an absolute masterpiece marking the triumph of the Neapolitan Baroque. Its history is intimately tied to that of the monachelle (Augustinian nuns): in the 17th century, a group of these sisters left their historic (and chaotic) sister convent in Forcella to seek a healthier, more isolated refuge on this hill, which was then immersed in greenery.
To give shape to their new home, the nuns entrusted the undisputed genius of Cosimo Fanzago. The result is breathtaking architecture: a convex facade that seems to embrace visitors, and an elliptical interior layout that feels like a womb of stone, light, and stuccos. Looking up at the splendid dome or walking on the precious majolica floor, framed by canvases of masters like Paolo De Matteis, you can still perceive the echo of a withdrawn, contemplative life. Visiting this place means discovering a haughty, secret, and noble Naples, a refuge suspended between the blue of the sky and the breath of the Gulf.
