A few steps from the monumental Piazza del Plebiscito, set like a precious jewel at the corner of the Royal Palace, stands the undisputed temple of opera and ballet.
Founded in 1737 at the behest of King Charles of Bourbon—a full forty-one years before La Scala in Milan and fifty-five before La Fenice in Venice—the Teatro di San Carlo boasts the absolute record of being the oldest continuously active opera house in the world.
